Design Inspiration - Kourtney Kardashian's Bold Design

I'm sure you have probably seen these photos of Kourtney Kardashian's house but I couldn't resist.  I know some people thought it was tacky but I LOVED it.  They took a lot of daring risks with the design that makes me want to step out of my comfort zone.

The light installation, coupled with the black and white stripes and the shot of blues turned this room in a masterpiece.

The striped chevron fabric is to die for.
 Even though I don't like the wallpaper, this is one sophisticated family room.

 The mirror over the stove and chevron wallpaper took this average kitchen up a notch.

Wall Painting & Optical Effects

No need to do much for enlarging a room or create perspective. You just have to know how to use paint to transform your interior. Here are some ideas for using optical effects properly:

Light Colored Walls & Floors

Light colored walls and floor would have an enlarging effect and would also enlighten the room. You'd better chose one color only from floor to ceiling: it won't draw attention to the corners, the room will then seem larger. Light teints (wood, white, light brawn) would also perfectly match with colorful furniture. 




Dark floor, light walls

A dark floor would make an enlarging effect and give more character to your interior. That is the reason why it is mainly advised to have a floor slightly darker than walls. Grey or black floors can be very elegant but they would also draw attention on the floor only, overlooking the rest of the room. What's more, pay attention to colorful floor, your eyes might get tired of it very quickly! 



Light floor and dark walls

Dark walls - with light floor and ceiling - would seem higher and deeper but also very tight. You should also have a very bright room if you want to use a dark painting, so that your interior doesn't seem too dark - pretty much like a shady basement. 


Light floor and walls, dark ceiling

A dark ceiling would make the room lower. Nevertheless, if you have a high ceiling, painting it might be a good idea, it will give the space some colorful energy and transmit light from the different ceiling lights. 




Colorful niche

Painting a niche will allow gaze to escape the room and create the illusion of an open space. Use of a colorful canvas or mirror would have basically the same effect. 



Paint one wall only

Paint one or two walls instead of all of them modify the organization of space and contribute to make it larger and more open. Paint the wall at the back with a strong color will enlarge the room. For example use it at the end of a tight corridor. Be careful if you decide to paint lateral walls, it will make the room longer but tighter.



 Play with lines

Horizontal lines will open the room in its width. Vertical lines will extend the space to the back of the room. Then, it is strongly advised to use line perpendicularly to the longest walls in order to enlarge the room. 




Vertical lines on the walls (or curtains) will stretch the wall to the ceiling, whereas horizontal lines will make the walls wider.
  


Pay attention not to select too big lines in small interiors. It will make the room smaller.

Luxe for Less & DIY - Pottery Barn Mirror

I've loved this Pottery Barn mirror for years but at $699 it's overpriced and the wrong color.  There are numerous tutorials to DIY your own mirror  but they seemed a little too complicated aka they had math involved and I don't have the patience for measurements.  I also have an irrational fear that I might lob off a finger messing around with a circular saw so those tutorials weren't for me.  Nope, definitely not for me, I love my fingers.

Then, I saw this tutorial using Dollar Store mirrors and I figured, why not try it? Even if it was a epic fail I wouldn't blow a lot of money.

I didn't follow all the instructions in the link above because I wanted a much bigger mirror and needed a more sturdy and stable backing.



I started with 25 of these mirrors from the dollar store.  They're really cheap looking with a plastic frame and they come in black, brown and  I believe red.


I painted the frames with Martha Stewart gold craft paint


Since the mirror would have some weight to it and I wanted to hang it,  I purchased  this kit from Michaels for less than $5 to use.




I also purchased a sheet of 5 MM plywood and had it cut the Home Depot for $15. (no circular saw for me).  I screwed the hanging hook into wood on either side and I did pull my level out to make sure they lined up together.  The piece of plywood I used measured 43 x 54 3/8.



I made sure the mirrors hung over wood by about 1/4 of the inch on all sides and just lined them up by eye balling them and glued them down using E-6000.

Here's the final product.  Isn't it pretty?  I only had one mishap when I pressed down too hard on one of the mirrors over the hanging screws and it broke so be careful when pressing down over that area if you are going to try this project. Other than that mishap, it was an easy, peasy project than gives a great impact.



Here's a sneak peak of how it looks in my room.  I'm finally on track to finish the room after a gazillion years. Yeahhh!!!

Practical details & Delivery

Where to go?

If you don�t have much time, just go to Kerokoban Street (Jalan Kerokoban) which stretches from Seminyak to Kuta. It�s 5 min away from the center of Seminyak (30.000 Rp), 10 minutes from the center of Kuta, and 20 minutes from the airport. But you�ll find home d�cor shops all over the place in Bali ! You can also customize and personalize your furniture for a very reasonable price.

Shipping furniture from Bali

Furniture can be shipped everywhere in the world. I asked in 2 shops and it�s around USD200 to ship 1 cubic meter to Paris and the same price for 2 cubic meters to New York, whatever the weight of your container. Don�t forget to ask about applicable taxes and/or VAT in your home country.

If you buy from several different shops you can hire an export agent (such as Lys Trading, Bali Export Asia ou Permata International Cargo). They�ll collect everything from the different shops and will send it for you.

Good to Know...

Balinese woods are used to humidity. When you ship them to a drier country, the wood might crack if it hasn�t been properly dried or if it�s of a poor quality. Better spend a few dollars more to avoid that kind of bad surprises.

When you buy brand new furniture, check the Forest Stewardship Council label to make sure it promotes a responsible management of forests.

And don�t forget to bargain!
