Full Bloom

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all had a Happy Easter and a great weekend.  My azaleas are in full bloom so I'm going to enjoy them because they don't bloom for long.

Powder Room - Thirty Dollars Update

Did you ever start a project that took forever to finish?  Well my powder room was that project for me.  I started the room way, way back when here.  I was dying for brown room but I after I painted it, I didn't love it but I kept it for at least a year thinking it would grow on me and it didn't.

After living with it for over a year, I still wasn't happy (the dang thing refused to grow on me). While I shopping in Walmart, I bought a gallon of discontinued paint for $4 (Can you believe that price?) and immediately I thought of my powder room.  Yes a plan was forming.

After painting, I loved the color but I felt it was missing something so tada, I thought why not use the stencil I used in the guest bedroom.  Stenciling the wall in the bedroom was easy compared to stenciling the bathroom.  I did a lot #^%$@# when I got to the corners and behind the toilet.  After three days (I took a lot of breaks), I was finally done and it's so worth it and the best part is I only spent $30 for the drastic change. Yes, $30, I love a good bargain.

Cost breakdown
Paint $4
Frames - $11 (I bought them at Michaels for $2.50 a piece when they had the $5 coupon)
Stencil - Free
Gold Paint Martha Stewart - $6
Shade - $8 - Target
Art Work - Free (made by me)

Doesn't my fake flowers look good? #Don'tjudgeme

Loving my free artwork and my $2.50 Michael frames

Now this makes me happy so much better than the brown, what do you think?

Christmas Decorations

Well Christmas is right around the corner and I'm trying to get into the spirit so I finally slapped my wreath on my front door and added the mini trees to the porch.  I'm hoping that seeing them will get me in the Christmas spirit.  Have you put up all your decorations already?

Don't pay any attention to cord in front of the door, the bricks and the crooked picture. I rarely use the front door anyway :).

So, I finally broke down and painted my house.  After I received all the quotes, I was tempted to paint this bad boy myself but images of me lying on the ground with a broken neck kept me from attempting the job.  The look of the house is very traditional and was painted with white trim and black shutters.  I decided to go with a darker trim to make the house look a bit more contemporary.

A Taste of Something New

It's surprising to see how my decor taste have changed over the years. Unfortunately I don't have a magic wand to replace everything when that happens, so I have to work on one room at a time.
My family room is definitely on my list to revamp, it currently looks like this:

The sofa was a custom piece and I learned a hard lesson on that purchase, do not buy an investment piece of furniture that's not a neutral.  Since, the sofa is an eight way hand tied piece, I want to keep the sofa but I'm going to have to slipcover it so that it can work with my new decor.  (Full disclosure, I can't claim the swag nor the blinds, those were hand me downs from the last owners.)

I think a paint job, removing the armoire, drapes, vertical blinds and adding some new accent furniture will give me the look I want.  After all the changes I hope to have a family room that feels as airy as the one below.

Do you have a piece of furniture that you purchased a while back, that you wouldn't buy today?

Townhouse Kitchen - My First Design Project

When I moved into my townhouse eight years ago, I had a builder's kitchen.  Although the cabinets were mid-range maple cabinets they came along with green laminate countertops.  I knew I wanted to update the kitchen but I didn't want it to be a trendy kitchen that would be dated as soon as the trends faded away.

I replaced the countertops, sink, faucet and added a backsplash.  Since it was the first time I was engaging in a major design decision, I was scared that I might pick the wrong materials.  It's not like you can return installed granite back to the store for an even exchange. :)  Now six years later, I think the kitchen still looks relevant and hopefully will continue to be for years to come. And I still love my faucet!

Home Tour - Guest Room

I'm finally getting around to completing all my half finished projects around the house, and trust me I have quite a few of them.  I'm going to try tackling a project each month.  We'll see how that goes.

This past weekend I worked on my guest room and I think I'm finally done until my Design ADD kicks in again.

Here's a shot of the room before, in all of it's purple glory.

Here's the guest room now.

I know the imperial trellis pattern is "supposed" to be last season but I still love it, plus this pillow came from Target and only cost $10.  Can't beat the price and the shot of blue has a huge impact in the room.

The wall color is sauteed mushroom.

I purchased the stencil months ago and was dragging my feet because I thought it was going to be a lot of work but it only took around 4 hours for the wall.  I used a roller and it was fairly easy except for last row since I had to bend the stencil.

The paint for the stencil pattern was a metallic paint from Martha Stewart and the mirror was purchased from Home Goods.

Every guest room needs a chair and this chair doesn't overwhelm the room, plus I'm a sucker for nail head trim.

I purchased this capiz shell chandelier from Target when they had their last global bazaar event, it was on clearance for $25.  This was definitely an awesome buy.  I do miss Target's global design event, I wonder if they'll bring it back.
Well that was the room in all it's glory, one project down, countless to go......

Home Tour - Living Room

Awww, the living room. When I was growing up it was one of those rooms you couldn't sit in because it had the "good furniture". We also had plastic on the sofas so it was definitely not a comfortable room. Nothing is ickier than sweating in 90+ degree weather on plastic couch. Trust me it's not pretty.

When I moved into my current home I knew that I wanted the living room to do double duty and it had to be a room that was actually lived in. My daughter & I love reading so I knew that it had to function as the library as well the living room. With some patience I created a room that I think that suits both needs plus it didn't cost a lot.
The room cost me less than $1500
Chairs & Rug - Overstock - $520
Sofa - $100 (from a furniture clearance center)
Side tables - Walmart - $130
Pillows - ZGallerie and Marshalls - $80
Book cases - Target - $160,
Lamps - TJMaxx - $50
Bowl Ikea - $30
Accessories - Home Goods - $30
Mirror- $50 - Consignment Furniture Shop,
Window Treatments - Linen and Things - $120
Coffee Table - Z Gallerie - $200

The sofa above cost me $100 from a furniture clearance warehouse.  Couldn't pass up that deal.  The sofa does have a some damage on the leather but a throw pillow covered up that little issue.

The chairs were purchased from Overstock and the pillows are from Marshalls. The chair is a comfy place to hang out with a book or a glass of wine.

The room can be viewed from at least three places in the house and calls you in have a seat.

Fresh flowers also gives a room an extra touch.

The lamp gives off such a beautiful glow and the best thing was the price.  Here's a look back on my little lamp DYI project that produced these lamps.

The mirror was a great find at a furniture consignment store.

Doesn't this IKEA bowl look great on the glass table with some cheap Christmas ornaments?

Home Tour - Dining Room

My dining room is the least used room in my house.

It's really sad especially since it was a must have when I was looking for a home. Now I know it's really not a must have, but should have been a maybe. I just knew that every Sunday I would dress it up and have beautiful dinners. Ha, Ha, Ha, well that didn't happen. Oh well you live and you learn.

I've lived in my house for two years and only used the poor room two times after I purchased my eat-in kitchen furniture two months after I moved in. We then dropped the dining room like a hot potato and we're now happily eating all our meals in the kitchen. The problem is when I used to walk through the dining room, I always felt as if I was short changing the dining room plus it was a storage room for my lights for two years. Every time someone new came to visit or to work on something in my house they would always ask me if just moved in.

Now that all of my lights have been installed (I've never been happier to turn on my lights, Im sure the electric company is happy) the room looked bigger and empty and started screaming "HELP ME". So during our "NO SNOW" snowstorm in GA, I decided to finally work on the room and although a room is never really finished I do like the way it looks so far. Makes me want to throw a dinner party.

The absolutely best part is that the room only cost me less than $700.

What you do think?
